Sweet and Sour Sauce
Sweet and Sour Sauce - Primal, Paleo, Kid Friendly and Clean Eating
A long time ago in a land far, far away there was a girl who loved battered chicken with sweet and sour sauce from the Chinese takeaway, it was a treat that made that night special, it was wrong in so many ways but it tasted so good I didn’t really care.
It is 5 years later, and sweet and sour chicken from the Chinese takeaway is a distant memory, I had not found anywhere that could replicate the naughty goodness that I fondly remembered. That was until I stumbled across a recipe that was easily converted to make it clean, I remember squeaking I was so excited about the prospect of not only sweet and sour chicken but one I could eat and not feel like I had done something naughty.
Once I made it I came to the conclusion that it was actually better than the Chinese takeaway version, it has become a not so naughty treat that makes me smile every time I have it.
1 cup water
juice of 1 orange
1 cup vegetable stock
¼ cup cider apple vinegar
2tbs tomato paste
1tbs coconut aminos
add tapioca flour to thicken
Combine all ingredients over a medium heat until smooth, then whisk in tapioca flour to thicken the sauce.
I use about 1tsp of tapioca flour as I like my sauce somewhat runny, you can add as much as you like to create a sauce that makes you happy.
To make this a little more Chinese takeout authentic I like to add orange segments, pineapple chunks and red pepper to the sauce with some chicken, it goes really well with cauliflower rice too.
